Disability Awareness
I wonder if it would be a good idea to have a disability awareness day once a year. We could take a number of mainstream students in school and have them try to do a number of tasks that they find easy, e.g. buttoning up shirts, tying shoe laces and communicating their needs. However, the tasks would not be so easy for them if they had boxing gloves on their hands and they were not allowed to use their voices, but only able to point. Also, how would our mainstream students manage to get around the school building wearing blindfolds?
This is just one example of helping young people to walk in the shoes of their disabled peers and could lead to good discussions about disability awareness in our society and what we can do to make life easier for those less able than ourselves.
